Moisturizing Properties of Olive Oil
The story of the moisturizing effect of olive oil is very interesting, because it is similar to preventing formation of gums in gasoline by adding antioxidants to it.
Free radicals start a chain reaction that produces a polymer resin such as an oil paint film which propels water from its surroundings, and when this occurs in the skin cell membrane, it will prevent the skin cells from retaining water leading to severe drought.
Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibiting other oxidation reactions. They protect skin cell membranes by reacting with free radicals themselves.
Anti-infammatory Prperties of Olive Oil
The powerful antioxidant properties of olive oil - thanks to its content of vitamins and flavonoid polyphenols which are deeply absorbed - makes it an ideal rescue agent that can save the cell membrane from free radical damage, the starting step in inflammation, atherosclerosis, and aging.
Olive oil also contains a substance known as oleocanthal which has anti-inflammatory properties. Actually olive oil has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and it is used as a vehicle of many anti inflammatory medicaments.
Olive Oil as a Skin Exfoliator
We use alpha and beta hydroxy-acids to exfoliate the skin, why olive oil? you ask, and the answer is that olive oil through its moisturizing, and antioxidant effect which nullifies free radical effects, both ensures a rapid turnover of skin cells and thus pores are not clogged with dead skin cells.
It is well known that olive oil soothes and softens skin, giving it a smooth supple appearance.
