As there is no positive calorie foods there is no negative calorie foods in nature. It is a negative calorie effect that is created inside our bodies. Naming them negative calorie foods - I know it is right but compare them to foods with negative calorie effect - created a confusion about their calorie content, and the confusion was turned into a myth when the advocates of these foods and their copy cats, explained the effect to be caused by the energy consumed in their digestion.
I should admit that I never understood the concept of the body consuming calories to extract less amount of calories from a food! In fact, the critics of these foods say that there is no food actually possess negative calories, and there is no scientific proof to confirm the theory.
Excreting Negative Calorie Foods Residue Is What Creates their Negative Calorie Effect
Negative calorie foods are composed of fiber, high content of water, and little amounts of macro-nutrients that are digested and absorbed like any other food, leaving the fiber undigested.
To see how the body deals with fiber by yourself, add 1 tablet or 1 tsp of a laxative containing fiber (e.g.Psyllium seeds) in a cup of water and leave for 4-6 hours, then watch the watery mass that is formed. This is exactly what happens to fruits and veggies in the body.
The weight of fiber in vegetables and fruits ( a little number of grams as they are mostly composed of water), is doubled so many times by absorbing water while passing down the alimentary lumen, to form this heavy mass. Moving this heavy mass to be excreted is what makes the body loses energy when eating fiber-rich, low-calorie foods.
Comparing the calories consumed in excreting water saturated fiber to the small amount of calories in food containing them, makes us obviously understand that they have a negative balance of calories, and the net result of eating them is losing energy.
Negative Calorie Foods for Weight Loss
Since we know that these foods have a negative calorie balance, then the more we eat them the more the extra pounds we lose. We can deceive the body that the stomach is full, by combining a little calorie dense foods to them (whipped cream on fruits, or oil on salad will do the trick) to start any diet plan.
Negative calorie foods can be the starting phase for any one who desires to lose weight, they can be a part of any diet plan, and they are full of micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and enzymes) that can boost the metabolism.
