Halawa Wax Recipe - Cold or Sugar Waxing

By

Halawa means sweet in Arabic. Since very long time, the Egyptians had been made a sweet confection using Sesame and Honey or Sugar. They use it for eating and for hair removal, and we will discuss both.

Edible Halawa

Ingredients:

1- Roasted Sesame 1/2 kilograms

2- Sea Salt 3/4 teaspoon

3- Honey (Molasses) 1/2 kilograms

4- Flavor as wanted

Method:

1- Mix sesame seeds and the salt crystals and grind them repeatedly (up to 3 times)

2- Add the honey or molasses and the flavor to the ground mixture and paste using a spatula

3- Pour into a container dish and put in the rfregirator

4- Flavoring can be made using Cardamon, Anise, Cocoa powder, Carob powder...etc.

You can add unsalted peeled nuts, whipped egg white, few drops of liquid Vanilla... elaborate. The color will range from beige to dark yellow according to the ingredients used. You can adjust the quantities to suit the type of raw materials you are using.

Halawa comprises the benefits of essential fatty acids and vitamin E in Sesame and the health benefits of honey. It can be eaten as snacks, added after gritted to the top of Ice cream, cut into cubes and immersed in Cocoa, or used by so many ways as a sweet healthy food.

Halawa sweet ( Egyptian Sugar Wax )

This is a very old Egyptian recipe for hair removal, it is completely natural and extremely effective. It is a caramel right before reaching the crysallizsation stage (so the taste and the name). It is easy to make, as long as you observe the carmelization of the sugar, because it can be easily burned. It happens that experienced makers of this recipe burn it, so if you burn a batch just make another one, and put it under your scrutiny once the color changes to golden brown.

Ingredients :

1- Water --------------------------------- 1/4 cup

2- Sugar (honey or molasses) ------ 2 cups

3- Lemon Juice ------------------------ 1/4 cup

Method :

1- Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil

2- Watch the color when it changes to golden brown, lower the flame and continue to simmer

3- Once the color changes to brown, turn the heat off

4- Allow to cool a little to keep it pourable, then pour small quantities onto heavy duty plastic that will not melt. You may use a small plate as you will need to peel it off something pliable when it cools

5- Test it after it cools, pull a piece off the plastic and stretch it through pulling :

* It should be easy to to stretch and pull

* If it is too hard, reject it and make a new patch, you heated too long * If it is too liquid, heat once more, or make a new batch

** You may buy a candy thermometer and heat the mixture to 260 °F.

How to Make Sugar Wax

Yet Another Way to Make Halawa Sweet

Some other forms and ingredients to make its preparation more easy, and its use more convenient, thaks to the astringent and soothing additives.

Ingredients

1- Clear Lemon Juice 1 cup

2- Sugar 5 cups

3- Water 1 cup

4- Apple Cider Vinegar Few drops

5- Alum powder A little

Method: Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and put on a slow heat. Observe the the changes in color to guard against burning it. You should get something like honey in consistency, the color of which is golden brown.

How To Use Halawa To Remove Hair

 - Stretch the halawa onto your skin in the direction of hair growth - Press down firmly and pull back, jerking it off in one quick movement - Repeat until the skin area is free of all hair, this may require 3-4 times - For the first time, you may find it painful at the begenning - Try it after a shower so that the skin is free from any dust or foreign allergen - Do not use moisturizer before using halawa, it will make it more difficult - After finishing up, rinse the skin with cold or luke water to remove any remaining halawa - You can rub your skin - specially the face- with ice cubes - Redness is usual, don't worry - You can make a mask to use after you wax using halawa, using cold water, milk powder and talc powder. Paste the ingredients and put it on the skin until it dries up, then rinse with water

* The hair will grow finer and finer each time you use it

This Luipn seed permanent hair removal - does it work on it's own as the instruction state? Or is this in combination with sugaring?

I have been searching for years for a way to permanently remove hair without having to go to laser treatments. This is the first time I have seen anything that implies it is possible even.

wat is alum? and can i use just vinegar or is it compulsary to use vinegar u suggesteed?plzzzzzzzz reply me.i am eager

elqalatawy 3 years ago

Alum is potassium aluminum sulfate, or potash alum,it  is one form that has been used in food processing. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a food additive, but in large quantities — well, an ounce or more — it is toxic to humans.

Yes you can use any type of vinegar, we need it just to slightly acidify.

celticphan 3 years ago

Can you store this long term, and if so, how? Can you pour it on a baking sheet to cool, or on one of those new silicon baking sheets? About how much vinegar and alum should be added?

elqalatawy 3 years ago

Hi Celtiphan, thanks for stopping by!

Yes you can store it by pouring onto a wrapping paper, a plastic container, a baking sheet or silicon baking sheets, and after it is cooled keep in the refrigerator.

Add a few drops of vinegar and 1/4 teaspoonful of alum powder.

Celticphan 3 years ago

Thank you for the reply. I did try making it last night, and was able to use it, but I think I am going to have to make a new batch as this one has become rock hard overnight! I have made sugar waxes before, but the recipe I used in the past was cooked until it was the color of gingerale, then stored in a container and reheated before application and required the use of paper or cotton strips to remove it. As I understand it, this one you just knead to warm it enough to smooth it onto your skin, then pull off without using paper or cotton, right? Last night, while I was using it, I just continued to knead the piece I had used, and reapplied it again and again until all the hair was removed, not something that could be done with the other recipe I had.

I like the fact that both are easy to clean up (and tasty if you make a mistake!), and you don't have to use any harsh chemicals to removed the residue.

Do you know where lupin seeds can be purchased? At a health food store, perhaps?

Thank you!

elqalatawy 3 years ago

You are welcome.

Don't you find Lupin seeds in any grocery? if not go to a herbalist, although I think it should be available at stores selling beans and legumes.

Celticphan 3 years ago

I live in a small town without a lot of variety at the grocery stores. We do have a health food store, and my mother lives in a bigger town with more access to such. I will try that.

Am I right about how to use halawa - knead it to warm it, press it into the skin where hair removal is desired, and pull off without strips? Should it be stored in the refrigerator?

elqalatawy 3 years ago

Exactly.

Sofmak 3 years ago

Hi, I tried making halawa according to your recipe today. I heated the ingredients together until they boiled then let it simmer for almost fifteen minutes but it never changed colour. now it is cooled and almost half the quantity of the original mixture and is still a clear thick syrup!

what happened?

elqalatawy 3 years ago

Hi Sofmac,

Heat once more and let to cool and try it. If it doesn't work make a new batch but don't apply high flame to allow it to take the right consistency. You may reduce the water amount a bit.

Zum 2 years ago

Hi,

I tried to make the halawa wax according to the said quantity. The water contents seems more so I reduced the water in the middle and added more sugar but I never saw the light brown color and niether brown. I live in UK and the sugar here is very granulated almost powerded. is it because of that?

Help

elqalatawy 2 years ago

Hi Zum,

The color is just an indication of the change occuring in the mixture and it is described according to the type of sugar used locally, the most important thing is the consistency which should be sticky.

You're welcome!

I did not guarantee the result, there were no clinical trials conducted to prove that, nevertheless, some people have tried it and it works for them, and it is a safe stuff with no worry about a harmful effect, you just try it.

Make it a simple way of dealing with something, apply it a short while after hair removal once a day.

Hi,

I have a question regarding the recipe with yeast and honey. The ingredients are just mixed together as they are, or they should be cooked together?

Can you be more precise with this recipe, please, I have very sensitive skin and this would mean the world to me if it can reduce the pain.

Can you answer me these questions, I would be very grateful.

1. The quantity of yeast vs. quantity of honey?

2.How much water? How much lemon juice?

elqalatawy 19 months ago

Hi DeeDee,

Thanks for visiting.

add 1 tsp yeast to 1 tsp honey, and then either mix them to 1/4 cup of yogurt or add 1/2 tsp lemon juice.

So, I can either mix yeast and honey with yogurt OR I can mix them with 1/2 tsp lemon juice. Which one do you prefer? what is the difference?

And just one more thing. I add few drops of rose oil at the end, right?

elqalatawy 19 months ago

Lemon juice and Yogurt contain the alpha hydroxy acids (AHA)Citric acid and Lactic acid respectively. I prefer Lactic acid (Yogurt).

Yes you can add rose oil.

Good Luck.

Lulu 11 months ago

Hi I'd like to ask about your lupin suggestion for hair removal? Is this a permanent method for hair removal?

Also, after doing some research online, I noticed that lupin seeds can be deadly if prepared incorrectly and that the seeds need to be soaked in water before boiling in order to remove the toxic elements.

Is this the same water that you're suggesting we put on our skin? How safe is this method and if there are unsafe elements within the water what are they?

How exactly does this water work? Does it thin the hair or kill the follicle or do something else?

Thanks for your time! I would love to try this out but I would like to know what I'm putting on my skin as it is very sensitive and prone to scarring.

elqalatawy 11 months ago

Hi Lulu,

Thanks for your visit.

Soaking lupin seeds is to remove the anticholinergic alkaloids in the beans (they are like atropine), and yes this is the water you need to use.

Anticholinergics are a class of medications that inhibit parasympathetic nerve impulses by selectively blocking the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to its receptor in nerve cells. The nerve fibers of the parasympathetic system are responsible for the involuntary movements of smooth muscles present in the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, lungs, etc.

This method is used traditionally for long time and has not been submitted to research, so little is known about its effect and it is safe. It is better if you try it on a small patch of your skin.

Lulu 11 months ago

Thank you for your response.

I have a few more questions... Is this a permanent removal method? And is it suppose to be applied liberally/as a thin coat?

I'm a little apprehensive about putting this on my skin as it will probably be absorbed in my blood but you're saying it's safe? Thanks again

Lulu 11 months ago

Sorry, I ask a lot of questions, but I'd also like to know what you know about alum stone/powder for hair removal?

Many thanks for your responses!

elqalatawy 11 months ago

Dear Lulu,

The Lupin seeds themselves are eaten in large quantities, and their constituents are not supposed to be present in large quantities, you just use the solution liberally as recommended and it is supposed to remove hair permanently.

I don't know much about alum/stone powder for hair removal, other than it is potassium aluminium sulfate that is used in depilatory waxes used for the removal of body hair, or applied to freshly waxed skin as a soothing agent.

Sanaa 11 months ago

hi

i'm on accutane to try an solve my persistent acne... does the lupin water sting/burn? i would like to use it on my face due to a side effect from the medication... but my skin now is thin as a byproduct of the medication... If it doesn't sting should i use t regardless? or wait a few (traumatic) months after to start?

elqalatawy 11 months ago

Hi Sanaa,

Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Anything natural is by far safer than Accutane!

For applying anything on your skin start by testing a small batch on your hand, and see for yourself its odor, effects, and side effects. As for Lupins we already eat them and it does not burn, and you will see for the odor.

sarah 10 months ago

hi elqalatawy,

I was hoping you could answer a few questions I have about the lupin hair removal recipe.

1. What should the ratio of lupin seeds to water be? For example, how about how many seeds should we soak in 1 gallon of water?

2. What temperature should the water we soak the luipin seeds be?

3. What will happen if we don't refrigerate the finished lupin water?

Thank you in advance!

elqalatawy 10 months ago

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the visit.

1- Why gallon? just soak 2-3 oz in 2 cups of water

2- Room temperature

3- Since the water contains organic substances it will spoil

I'm excited to try your recipe and will follow your guidelines!

RJ 8 months ago

Hi

Great topic you have here! :)

Im very interested in trying your lupin recipe. I have read the previous questions and I have additional queries:

1. How many times a day should the lupin solution be applied?

2. On what time of the day should this be applied?

3. Should one use cotton for applying the solution?

4. Is it safe to use on the face and genital areas?

5. How long before one notice its effects?

6. Is it okay to use lotion after/before applying lupin solution?

Regarding your Halawa recipe, also have some questions:

1. I've been making this recipe for months but when I store it for weeks, I notice it becomes watery afterwards. What's the ideal shelf life of the Halawa recipe?

2. I follow the "monitor the color" and "250 temperature" but most of the time, it still turns hard rock overnight. I want to achieve the non-strip waxing nature of Halawa. any tips?

Thanks! and all the best!

Sunny 8 months ago

Hello,

I would also like to know the answers to the questions RJ has posted and have a few of my own regarding the Lupin water:

1. Is it safe to use on new or old cuts/wounds?

2. Does it work on ingrown hairs or should the hairs be exposed?

3. Is it safe to store in a plastic water bottle?

4. Also, I am going to go on vacation in less than three weeks time and would like to try this before I leave. Would there be a problem if I applied this mixture every 16 hours rather than 24 hours? So, for example I would apply it three times every two days. Once on day one then two times (16 hours apart) day two.

And I have a question for your readers:

1. Has anyone here tried the lupin water with success? Has anyone not had this work for them?

Thanks to all in advance!

Hi RJ,

Thank you.

- 1 time daily

- On a fixed time every day

- Yes use cotton

- Yes it is safe

- Not before 2 weeks

- yes use anything, it is not irritant

Good luck!

-

elqalatawy 8 months ago

Hi Sunny,

- I don't know about its application on wounds but for the old ones it's OK, because the wound is already closed

- It is supposed to be absorbed to act on ingrown hairs, and it is absorbed

- Store it like any biological solution, try not to make very large stockUse

- Yes use it 3 times every 2 days

Hi Dee,

Use the bitter variety.
