Henna and Lemon juice How to- Hair Color At Home
By elqalatawy
Do Not Buy Pre-mixed Henna
You will find commercially produced "Henna For Hair" in a range of colors, do not buy them. There is no such plant as "brown henna", "blonde henna", or "black henna". The plant henna (Lawsonia Inermis) has only one dye molecule (Lawsone) which is red-orange color. Only the plant leaves that contain that molecule.
Manufacturers of "Henna Hair Dye" borrowed the techniques used in dyeing fabrics using henna or other coloring agents to dye hair. These techniques use metal salts, as they alter and fix a dye stain. The salts of silver, copper, nickel, cobalt, bismuth, iron, and most frequently lead have been used in premixing henna. Some of them use the synthetic chemical Para-phenylene-diamine, used in artificial hair dyes to obtain the black color.
You should know that all the additives in premixed henna may have a negative impact on the health of your hair and skin in particular, and on your body in general.
Only Use Henna Leaves Powder To Paste
The dyeing molecule in henna is present only in their leaves, if you want to use henna you should get the powdered henna leaves of the color and consistency shown in the picture below. You will mix it with other materials from your kitchen as we will detail.
Henna proved its benefits for hair and skin for hundreds of years, you can even reinforce its benefits by including other natural materials that are known to be good for your hair health, such as vinegar, lemon, chamomile, pomegranate, hibiscus, curcuma, saffron...etc.
One final point you should be aware of, the henna hair colors are optimal for gray or blonde hair. Don't expect that henna will change black hair to be blonde, unless you bleach it and this is another story (or you can lighten the color of your hair by some lemon juice). Henna on dark hair will produce a shade of the desired color.

Nail Peach-Pink Color by Henna
Warm water ------------------------- sufficient amount
Henna powder (color desired)--- sufficient amount
Small paintbrush
Make a thin paste by adding water to some henna powder. Apply to
nails with a small paintbrush. Allow to completely dry. When dry, rinse
off with warm water. This will give a soft peach - pink color ( when using plain henna) which
will not chip. The color henna you choose will determine the color on
your nails.

This is wonderful advice. I am a huge fan of using pure henna and I use it before applying indigo as my hair is dark with streaks of grey. I'll be trying out some of these tips next time. Thanks so much.
Interesting. I always thought henna is really dark brown in color just like in tattoos. Thanks for the information. Great hub.
This doesn't make any sense. You have to give us a base color first. Will these mixtures work on naturally black hair? I'm sure vinegar and lemon juice doesn't have the ability to dye hair that drastically. At least you could have stated the INITIAL hair color and how the mixture will affect it, as opposed to merely giving some ingredients you're implying will have a universal effect (which clearly can't be the case).
Hi Nikki,
Thanks for your visit and comment.
I have already mentioned that "this is best for gray or blonde hair. Don't expect that henna will change black hair to be blonde.". Yes I merely give NATURAL ingredients instead of chemicals and I don't claim that I present what the professionals can not do.
Very interesting and informative hub. I used to use henna years ago. I stopped using it because it was making my whitish hair orange. I think I will try using it again with the addition of cocoa powder.I will write how this works out.
Hello, I have dark brown hair and would like to get the penny copper color with henna. I see your ingredients states to use 1 can of 7 up. Do you think it will work for me, some other comments in other henna advice state that 7 up will make your hair fall off. I am a new henna user, (done it 2x with water and lemon juice). I love it so far but would like to get the copper penny color, can you help? Thanks a bunch.
hi Ivy,
Henna can color hair into darker color but not lighter, so you will compare the color of your hair and the color you desire in. If it is lighter than your hair henna will not work.
Hello, thanks for the info, but you forgot to answer me regarding the 7 up question.
Thanks.
Hi, great info. I have dark brown hair, I have chemical sensitivities and Im trying to find henna ingredient combinations that will darken my grays, will this do that with our dark brown list?
Also, will it actually be brown or the red that I keep seeing on all sites and they "say" its brown but clearly not :0(
Thanks for your help!
Hi Sandy, Thanks for the visit.

when i was 18 year old, i had a natural black hair, but it has been gradually turned into white colour. hix i dont like it. So how can i you henna and indogo to turn it into black hair.
Thanks in advance!
and best wishes
Hi tung,
To use henna and indigo to get black hair follow these steps:
First : Apply a henna paste to your hair to create a rich red base.
Second : Apply indigo over the freshly hennaed and washed hair to create the deep black color. Mix indigo with warm water until it’s the consistency of thick yogurt. (Optional, add 1 teaspoon salt per 100 grams of indigo powder for darker color). Allow to sit for 15 minutes
Apply the indigo paste to dry or damp (previously hennaed) hair in sections, completely coating all the hair down to the roots. It’s easiest if you Start from the back and move forward. Wear gloves to protect your hands from being stained, drape an old towel over your shoulders to protect clothing.
Wrap your hair in a shower cap or plastic wrap and allow to soak in for 1-2 hours. Rinse or shampoo to remove any residue.
Condition to soften hair (some people prefer to just use conditioner).
It takes about 2 days for the color to oxidize and show it’s true shade
Repeat monthly for thick and shiny black locks.
thank you very much. I will follow your advice and give you feedback soon. hope your way work well with my hair.

Hi Kris,
If the color of henna darker than the hair it will change its color (temporarily).

Hi, two weeks ago I dyed my hairs with Royal Henna,on the box it showed a dark brown but on my natural hair(dark blonde and half dyed light blonde) turned black,I desperately want to remove the black color, can you please give me some advises how to remove the black from my hairs?
And the other question is- is it safe to apply chemicals on dyed henna hair, in two months I am thinking to dye my hair with chemicals to get back a natural colour.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Hi Lina,
Welcome to my hub.
You may use a Poly Tar (meaning it contains more than one tar variety) repeatedly until you remove all the color.
The effect of applying chemicals on hair is delayed for 15 or 20 years, when the hair acquires an inferior quality regarding its consistency.
Hi
I have a question,
If I mix henna with (black food color) in order to get black color for my gray hair, could it work? or should i add something else?
i'm only 32 years old with a horrible gray hair :'(
Hi Shadia,
You may observe that I did not include black color here, because Henna will not produce black color without metals.
The herbalist (in Egypt) sells what is called 'Black Alum' and this is an Aluminum salt, it changes the texture of the hairs.
Some people claim that Egg plant (Aubergine) peel may add some black tinge, yet I am not sure of that. As long as you use edible plants, why not try them? we introduce them into our bodies anyway.
